We have all been impacted by travel restrictions caused by COVID-19. If you are planning on travelling abroad this year, you may need a Fit to Fly test. This I because some countries and airlines may require a negative test with a certificate to prove that you do not have the virus and can safely travel.

It is important to note though that unless you are currently showing symptoms, a COVID-19 test is not free. Subsequently, this means that they shouldn’t be used to verify that you are fit to fly. If you are in need of a Fit to Fly test, a private test will need to be carried out.

There are a few ways that you can get a certificate, including via your GP or through a private practice. If you do choose to get a Fit to Fly test from a private service, you need to make sure that they are Government approved, otherwise your certificate may not be valid and it will be a waste of money.

What exactly is a Fit to Fly Certificate?

Following a test, you will be given a signed and stamped letter. This will be from an accredited clinic and signed by a doctor who is registered with the General Medical Council. The certificate will be used to confirm that you do not have any symptoms of COVID-19 and are fit to fly.

How much does a Fit to Fly test cost?

The cost of a test can vary depending on where you go to get it done. Various services are being offered for around £125+. You can pay more for a priority service which will mean you get your results and certificate quicker.

When should I get one?

This can also vary. When you need to get a fit to fly test will depend on the airline that you are travelling with. Some require a sample to be taken 96 hours before departure whereas others with require is 72 hours before. You may also find some airlines requiring that they receive the report itself within 48 hours before arrival.

You can also get home testing kits. If you opt for one of these, you should allow extra time before your departure date. Many kits can be ordered with next day delivery and results within 24 hours of the lab receiving your test. However, you should always double-check this and take delivery delays into account.

The different requirements can get confusing, so it is always best to check with your airline themselves before booking your test.

Travel Regulations

It is important to remember that travel regulations are frequently reviewed meaning that they are subject to change. You should keep up to date with the Government’s advice about travelling. You should also stay informed about the requirements and regulations of your destination country and any countries you may be passing through. If you have any questions about current regulations and requirements, please contact your airline and the authorities for the relevant locations.
